CAUCASIAN OVCHARKA

Caucasian Ovcharka (Caucasian Mountaindog, Caucasian Shepherddog, CO) is an ancient breed, about 2000-3000 yrs old. It comes from The Mountain Caucasus, Russia. Traditionally CO is used as a guard, to protect villages and flocks from robbers and beasts. This means that CO is a guard, not a shepherd!
This breed fits to this function extremely well. In spite of itīs big size (height 65-85 cm, weight 60-80 kg) itīs unbelievable nimble and fast. Without making any noise it can move and attack the intruder. They say, that CO can instincttively realize if the threaten is real or not.
When this dog is fighting, it is stubborn and persistent. It fights till the death if necessary. CO can fall into a trance and feel no pain.
In Russia CO always has been a popular guard in prisons, military command areas, police, and in industry. CO is wanted to be one manīs dog. For this target it has a natural tendency. For example, the dog and its master have lived together six months, meeting no other human beings. So the dog became very suspicious.
In normal society and in family you can have a friendly and social dog. But only if CO can meet different people and be in different places as often as possible when it still is a puppy. This way it grows confident and well-balanced adult dog.
CO is very independent by nature. It is calm and reliable. This dog protects his family from all dangers, but sometimes it also can be too protective.
Dogīs sense of hearing is better than normally. Because of this and its tendency of guarding it can bark a lot and especially at night. Thatīs why this breed doesnīt fit for everyone and to every environment. It need space and possibility to be outside.
CO likes every weather. It feels to be out, may it be hot or feezing cold. Its thick hair protects him both coldness and heat.
This dogīs owner should be purposeful, fair and patient person. CO is very intelligent dog and learn quickly. When it still is young, it can find many creative ways to get into trouble. But itīs also very sensitive. Hard and violent way to breed doesnīt suit to COīs owner. A good relationship basis to respect on both sides.
If you have Caucasian Ovcharka, youīll have a fine and faithful friend, but only if you are worthy of itīs friendship!
